Getting to Savannah & Getting Around
Facts checked October 18, 2026
Savannah has its own airport close to town, and the Historic District is one of the easiest places in the South to see without a car.
Flying in
| Code | Airport | Distance / link to town (source) |
|---|---|---|
| SAV | Savannah/Hilton Head International | 10 miles from the Historic District (airport’s own page) |
We don’t quote fares; they change by the hour. The search buttons open a live flight search to Savannah/Hilton Head International (SAV); change the dates and origin there.

Do you need a car?
For the Historic District: no. The squares are walkable, and Chatham Area Transit runs the free downtown “dot” shuttle: two loops, Forsyth and Downtown, stopping every ten minutes at 18 stops through the Historic District, seven days a week (CAT).
For day trips: yes. Tybee Island, Wormsloe and Bonaventure Cemetery are outside the shuttle area; drive, take a rideshare, or book a tour that includes transport.
Renting a car
If you do rent, compare the airport desks in one search rather than booking the first brand you see, and check what the rate includes (tolls, extra drivers, mileage) before you pay.
Airport transfer
Welcome Pickups has a Savannah page for pre-booked airport rides; the page lists flight monitoring for delays, 24/7 customer support and flexible cancellation (checked October 18, 2026). It’s worth comparing with a taxi or rideshare if you land late, travel with kids, or just want the ride sorted before you fly.
Luggage storage
Radical Storage’s Savannah page listed two options on Oct 18, 2026, one of them in the North Historic District. Handy between a morning check-out and an evening flight.
Schedules, routes and coverage change; confirm on the official page before you travel.
