Where to Stay in New Orleans

Most tours here start in or beside the French Quarter: ghost walks, the cemetery tour desk on Basin Street, Gray Line’s holiday buses at 400 Toulouse St, and the riverboats. Many swamp tours offer pickups from French Quarter and downtown hotels. So the main question is how close to the Quarter you want to sleep, and how much noise you’ll tolerate.

French Quarter

Our pick for a short first trip: you can walk to the ghost tours, Jackson Square, the riverfront and the holiday bus departures.

Faubourg Marigny

New Orleans & Company describes the Marigny as “located just down river from New Orleans’ historic center”, with a “bohemian spirit”. A slightly calmer base within walking distance of the Quarter.

Warehouse District

The official visitor bureau describes “residential lofts, museums, restaurants and art galleries”. Steps from the National WWII Museum and a short walk or shuttle to Mardi Gras World and the Quarter.

Garden District

New Orleans & Company calls it “the oak-lined Garden District”. It’s on the St. Charles streetcar line, for a quieter stay.

Mid-City

Closest to City Park, so handy in December for Celebration in the Oaks.

We don’t quote room rates; they change by date, and they rise sharply around Mardi Gras. Each button opens a live search for that area.
