Cades Cove: Guided Tour or Drive It Yourself?
Prices & schedules checked October 18, 2026
Cades Cove is a broad valley on the Townsend side of the park, circled by an 11-mile, one-way loop road past historic cabins, churches and a mill, with frequent wildlife sightings. The NPS says the loop is open sunrise to sunset and to allow at least 2–4 hours, longer if you hike. Traffic is heavy in summer, in fall and on weekends year-round.
Know before you go (NPS)
- Parking tag: required to park anywhere in the park for more than 15 minutes — $5 daily, $15 weekly, $40 annual. Tags are sold at the Cades Cove Visitor Center, the Great Smokies Welcome Center in Townsend and parking tag machines (including the Cades Cove Orientation Shelter and Townsend Wye), or online in advance via Recreation.gov (print it yourself).
- Vehicle-free Wednesdays: in 2026 the loop was closed to cars every Wednesday from May 6 to September 30 for walkers and cyclists. Check the NPS page for 2027 dates before planning a summer Wednesday.
- Tours don’t need a tag for you: on the guided tours below, you ride in the operator’s vehicle.

Our take
Cheapest guided option: Tennessee Mountain Tours, from $80, with headsets and an air-conditioned vehicle. Most in-depth: Smoky Mountain Guides’ small-group heritage tour (up to 10), which stops at a cabin built in 1822, a cemetery with Revolutionary War and War of 1812 veterans’ graves and a working grist mill. Most comfortable views: Pink Jeep’s panorama van, which skips 4x4 trails. Already have a car? The audio tour is one purchase per vehicle and works offline — download it before you set off.
