One Day in Charleston: A First-Timer’s Itinerary
Prices & schedules checked October 18, 2026
One day is enough for the big three: Fort Sumter, a guided look at the historic district and Charleston after dark. Everything below starts downtown, within the peninsula, and the times come from the operators’ or Viator’s listings. Check your date before you book, as schedules change.
Morning: Fort Sumter
Take the 9:30 a.m. ferry from Liberty Square (340 Concord St). The operator says to arrive 30 minutes early. The ride is about 30 minutes each way, with about an hour at the fort, so you’ll be back on the waterfront before lunch. Remember: cards only, and the restrooms at the fort are out of service (use the boat’s).

Rather skip the fort? Swap in a half-day plantation tour from the Visitor Center: the Magnolia tour listing starts at 9:30 a.m. and runs about 5 hours.
Afternoon: see the historic district
Pick one:
- Walk it: the Best Highlights walking tour (from $25 on Viator, about 2 hours) meets by the Old Exchange at 122 E Bay St. The listing describes flat, easy terrain, with stops including Rainbow Row and the Battery, and marks it wheelchair and stroller accessible.
- Ride it: the Old South horse & carriage tour (from $50, 1 hour) covers more than 2.5 miles and 30 blocks from 14 Anson St. Check in 15 minutes early; the listing warns latecomers can lose the booking without a refund.
- Hidden corners: the Hidden Alleyways small-group walk (from $34) also starts at the Old Exchange and visits Philadelphia Alley and Rainbow Row.
Food lover? The Downtown Charleston Food Tour (from $110, 2.5 hours, tastings at four restaurants) can stand in for both lunch and the afternoon walk.
Evening: on the water or with the ghosts
- Sunset cruise: the Carolina Belle offers a sunset departure (90 minutes, from $44.50) from the Maritime Center, 10 Wharfside St.
- Ghost walk: Pleasing Terrors (from $29, 90 minutes) meets in Washington Square behind City Hall, 80 Broad St. Our ghost tour guide compares nine more.
